Postcode Lottery: Using door drops in the marketing mix

Here at Postcode Lottery, the door drop channel has become a foundational pillar of our acquisition strategy, and this hasn't been by accident. In 2025, a fundamental restructuring of our door drop initiative combined a brand-new creative design with a bespoke data driven model. The goal; to optimise our door drop channel as a means of customer acquisition. We’re very often asked why we continue to give an ‘outdated’ channel such a prominent place in our marketing mix, but the real question we should be asked is, why does the door drop continue to earn it? Put simply, the results speak for themselves: they continue to demonstrate effectiveness as an acquisition tool by exceeding business objectives with a consistently strong return on investment. But what is it about the concept of the door drop that continues to power these results? The truth is that the channel has unique properties that no screen can replicate.

The power of touch

Touch fundamentally changes how people engage with marketing materials, and yet fewer businesses than ever are using direct marketing within their campaigns. Ofcom have reported that 6.5 billion letters were delivered to UK homes in 2025 – a significant drop from the 20 billion figure noted just twenty years ago, according to Ofcom. With the dramatic shift in marketing channel trends, many businesses have forgotten the importance of touch and how this helps a message to resonate. When we touch something, we engage with it emotionally in a way that scrolling can’t emulate. This is precisely the experience that our new-look door drop offers when we physically put our brand directly into people’s hands. Recent YouGov reporting has noted that 86% of UK consumers feel overwhelmed by online advertising1, yet fewer businesses are capitalising on this overstimulation by reintroducing that sensation within bespoke direct mail campaigns.

Perhaps one of the more surprising insights we’ve gained since the restructuring of our door drop channel is that it performs disproportionately well with younger audiences, a demographic that marketers tend to write off from physical mail entirely. It is counterintuitive, but it makes sense! Young adults have spent their entire consumer lives being marketed to through every screen put in front of them, and that oversaturation may be exactly why a physical message can cut through when the digital alternative doesn’t. With fewer mail pieces landing through mailboxes than ever before, this increasingly more unique sense of touch becomes more novel and more engaging, especially among audiences who are seemingly becoming unfamiliar with the channel.

Delivering quality reach

The significant reach of digital advertising shouldn’t be underestimated, but what it often struggles to do is hold on to that attention once it’s been won. If the goal of our campaign was just to be seen by as many eyes as possible, then digital would trump all other channels. But what happens after the ad appears in front of the consumer matters just as much as our campaign’s overall reach, and this is exactly where our door drop works hardest after it lands on the door mat.

JICMAIL data through Q2 of 2026 shows that the average door drop mailing has a lifespan of six days in the home, and in that time, it is interacted with around 3.3 times2. There is simply no digital channel that can claim that kind of staying power - adverts on television and social media have unquestionable reach, but their lifespans can only be measured in seconds. A door drop, by contrast, sits in the home, gets picked up repeatedly, is viewed by everyone in the household, and gets revisited days after it first arrives. That’s not just reach into a household digital can’t touch, it’s demonstrating a sustained presence within it, giving our messaging more opportunities to land and resonate with consumers. Aligned with the right creative, these moments of undivided attention are crucial to inspiring commercial actions, contributing to the continued return on investment that we routinely observe from the channel.

Creativity that earns trust

Postcode Lottery is a subscription-based lottery which raises money for charities and good causes. In this sector, trust isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s the entire proposition. In an advertising environment that is increasingly being shaped by phishing emails, scam calls and convincing AI deepfakes, consumers across the board have learned to treat anything digital with a healthy dose of scepticism. The tangibility of physical mail, in the home and in hands, lends a degree of trustworthiness that even the best digital campaigns fail to replicate. Royal Mail’s own research details that around 87% of surveyed UK based consumers consider physical mail to be believable, compared with only 48% for digital channels3. But trust in direct mail isn’t automatic. It depends on the creative and associated messaging to effectively capitalise on the channel’s enhanced credibility, which becomes increasingly more complex with unaddressed door drop mailings.

This is precisely why our creative shift in 2025 mattered so much, providing us with a trustworthy, high-quality, and brand-driven door drop mail channel that resonates with homes across the country. By design, they are clear and concise, with nothing overstated or overworked, and they become instantly recognisable as a Postcode Lottery mail piece. Clarity is where our credibility comes from here: a piece that looks and feels exactly what it claims to be, built specifically to reflect the authenticity that the business depends so much on.

Our door drops continue to earn trust through what they are, the quality of the design and paper, the creative messaging, and importantly the recognisability of our brand. Even though our door drops carry no names or addresses, with no obvious signal that they are meant for each person specifically opening them, the trust holds. But the creative makeover is only part of this story; equally important is the way we strategically changed how we use our data. By applying a bespoke, data-led model, we’re now able to effectively target homes in areas where our message is most likely to land. This kind of precision ensures that our door drop campaigns are executed well by reaching the right prospects, with the right creative, at the right time, rather than simply the widest possible audience.

Summary

Door drop mail continues to earn its place as a pillar of our acquisition strategy, not through habit, but through consistent results. The power of the channel lies within its simplicity, offering something that our digital media channels simply can’t replicate. Physical mail creates emotional engagement, and we now have a door drop mail channel that offers incredible reach whilst simultaneously keeping audiences engaged with its staying power. Our pack also enhances trust, stemming from its tangibility at a problematic time when digital channels face growing scepticism nationwide. Following our 2025 creative and data-driven restructuring, the channel's continued performance reflects its strengths in practice. As the advertising landscape becomes increasingly saturated by digital media, our door drop's physical presence offers something genuinely distinctive to our business - one that also represents our values as much as it drives our results.
