Sustainable AND Creative. Two sides of the same coin.
Sustainability is more than strict compliance, certification and carbon calculators.
It is a creative challenge.
Sustainability asks us all to be more efficient with resources, smarter with design, and more innovative. It asks us questions we haven’t thought of and demands new thinking to create less waste, use less resources or change processes.
As Robert Andersen from Tecna notes:
Sustainability as a constraint does not mean reducing ambition. It means directing it. The best outcomes come from teams who see sustainability not as a barrier, but as a framework for smarter thinking. Less waste. Fewer assumptions. More intent. The irony is that once sustainability is treated like any other design constraint, it stops feeling like a constraint at all. It becomes part of the craft. Part of the discipline. Part of what separates good from great.
Mail is no different.
Sustainability forces designers and creatives to think differently.
Here are five ways to turn sustainable constraints into your next creative advantage:
- Make your data your muse
Brilliant creative is wasted on the wrong audience. Start by rigorously cleaning your database and integrating tools like Royal Mail’s Postcode Address File (PAF). Removing outdated or irrelevant contacts isn't just about reducing waste—it allows you to craft highly personalised, relevant messaging for the exact people who want to hear from you.
- Pool prospects
Data analysis helps you prioritise, test and learn more about your customers. It can pinpoint your warmest prospects from previous campaigns, identify pools of customers to test at smaller print volumes and record the response to different offers and messages. This deliberate approach tightens your strategy, elevates engagement, and guarantees that every piece of mail you produce has a distinct, measurable purpose.
- Design for the full lifecycle
You should aim to get the most out of the materials and format you’re planning to use – with as little waste as possible. There are cost benefits to reducing the density of inks or changing the weight and size of mail, and these optimisations can also unlock more inventive and distinctive mail campaigns. Circularity demands a new design philosophy where you consider the whole lifecycle of a product or service. This sparks new and innovative ways to deliver your mail campaigns.
- Let the canvas do the talking
There is a powerful narrative hidden in the materials you choose. Sustainably sourced paper actively enriches biodiversity, protects water tables, and draws down carbon. Don't just use FSC or PEFC certified paper—use your campaign to tell your audience exactly why you chose it. The origin of your canvas can be as compelling as the message printed on it.
See here to learn more, drive behaviour change, and discover the benefits you can communicate to customers around sustainably sourced paper. And, if you wanted to go further there are other stories to tell throughout papers supply chain from renewably powered paper mills to high recycling rates.
- Recycling stories
There are many ways to improve recycling rates through using paper-based window envelopes, starch-based bags, biodegradable glue, zero plastic paper treatments and naked mailings. These are creative opportunities, often where the greater the innovation, the better the story. It is a chance to show a brand’s personality, demonstrate corporate responsibility and drive sustainable consumer behaviour. Better packaging1 is a good example of this - using the pack to tell a story.
These are just 5 readily available things you can do but of course there are more – and more to be invented.
When approaching briefs sustainability can be a pathway to creativity, effectiveness and innovation. It forces a new design philosophy and continues to ask questions of how your communication can deliver its message in new ways.
These efforts can also lead to higher scores across well-established certifications like B Corp2 and creative awards like the DMA3, SMP4, AdNetZero5 and Purpose6 Awards which in turn tell their own story about the level of creative thinking and innovation applied.
